Berlin Under Cyberattack: Hackers Demand Millions as City Systems Crippled

Berlin is facing a major cybersecurity crisis after hackers breached city systems and issued a multimillion-euro ransom demand. The attack, which took place earlier this month, disrupted several online services across the German capital and forced some government systems to be taken offline.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner has confirmed that the attackers are attempting to extort money from the city. According to reports, the ransom demand was delivered on Thursday evening. Wegner said Berlin authorities would not give in to the criminals, although officials have not publicly disclosed the exact amount being demanded.

German media outlet Der Spiegel has reported that the attackers are seeking 30 Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency currently worth roughly €2 million. The demand highlights the growing financial impact of ransomware attacks, in which criminals encrypt or steal data and then threaten victims with further consequences unless payment is made.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the resilience of public-sector IT infrastructure and the potential consequences of cyberattacks against major cities. Government systems often contain sensitive information and support essential services, making them attractive targets for organised cybercriminal groups.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the breach and assess the extent of the damage. While refusing to pay the ransom may prevent criminals from profiting directly from the attack, recovering compromised systems and securing affected networks could take considerable time and resources.
